Interesting things you can do with a PS3
The other day I was having drinks with my friend and it came up in conversation that the Playstation3 is able to run Linux. This was new to me! While talking about the possibilities some guys at a table nearby overheard us talking about that. Apparently they work at Sony and told me about some of the really interesting stuff PS3 can do.
- Apparently you can login to the PS3 from the Internet and control the camera if you have it.
- You can watch videos through your PSP a la Slingbox. Very cool!
- you can play games through your PSP also.
I guess this is common knowledge for Playstation fans but it’s the first I heard about any of it. It happens that CompUSA is going out of business and the CompUSA in South San Francisco happened to have PS3 in stock for 10% off. That’s a $50 savings, folks. Never one to deny the satisfaction of impulse buys, I promptly went to CompUSA and bought with a camera. I am currently in the process of installing Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon on my PS3.
Once I do this I’ll figure out how to do the remote login stuff and play games through my PSP. I am very excited about this.
Of course I will use it as a game system too, so I bought Assassin’s Creed. I haven’t played it yet because I want to get Linux on this thing first for no particularly good reason.
