MerchantCircle Highlights: Ann Arbor Golfing

In my value-influenced opinion, Rolling Meadows is the benchmark for great Ann Arbor area golf. It is a sprawling beautiful course about 10-15 minutes from North Campus. It’s moderately difficult because of its length but the fairways are generously wide and they grounds are fairly well kept. Congestion is hit or miss here because they run a lot of tournaments. The price cannot be beat, I think $18 for 18 holes without a cart?

Indian Trail Golf Center is an excellent driving range somewhat near Rolling Meadows. They have the high shag turf mats good for practicing irons, lots of space, a handsome pro shop building, and lots of buckets for cleaning your club heads. A fantastic driving range 1,000 times better than Miles of Golf’s range.

Huron Hills is off Huron Pkwy, you probably pass it when headed back to North Campus from the Whole Foods on Washtenaw. It’s a short and straight course and the back 9 is a lot shorter and easier than the front. I always feel a little ripped off playing here because it’s a lot smaller than Rolling Meadows but costs more. The greens and fairways are messy, presumably because they have a lot of traffic and since it’s a municipal course it doesn’t get a lot of money for grounds-keeping. It’s about $22 for a round, no riding carts available.

Hickory Sticks about 20-25 minutes from downtown towards the Meijer on Ann Arbor-Saline Road. If you get a coupon from the phone book it’s dirt cheap. They should have MerchantCircle coupons, that would be great. This course is big, well kept, and extremely hilly. You definitely want to get a golf cart. The golf carts even have satellite computers that tell you yardage and hole information — bonus! I think the coupon special with satellite riding cart on a weekday afternoon was ~$22 each.

Georgetown Country Club is a 9-hole executive par-3 course about 5 minutes from Briarwood Mall off Packard Rd. I’ve only been here on weekdays so I don’t know how busy it is on the weekends.

Leslie Park is a big 18-hole course just off Plymouth Rd between North Campus and U-M Hospital. Leslie Park has the nicest grounds but it’s relatively expensive — usually almost $40 for 18 holes — and always busy. I would say Rolling Meadows is about the same size but costs about half the price for 18.
