South San Francisco neighborhood: Avalon Park

The Avalon Park area is near the golf course and bleeds into San Bruno near the big military cemetery. Avalon Park is pretty much directly in the flight path of SFO. It can be very loud as 747s take off overhead. Be sure to look for houses with good sound insulation. Double-pane windows advised.

Notable employers nearby include Genentech, Gap world headquarters (San Bruno), and Youtube (San Bruno).

Househunting in Daly City -- 'Original' DC

Original Daly City is a 94014 ZIP and is mostly working class. It is an area that runs along Mission St. My guesstimate is the region below. I live in the Hillside sub-region of Original Daly City. Steep streets that run up the side of San Bruno mountain characterize this neighborhood.

Things seem cheaper in this area than 94015 ZIP neighborhoods. Adjacent houses touch wall-to-wall and lot sizes are smaller typically maxing out at 4,000 sq ft. It is generally more cramped than in the Daly City’s Western neighborhoods.

Mission Street is confusing. As you go South towards Costco it branches off to eventually rename as El Camino Real. El Camino Real stretches all the way down the peninsula to San Jose, I think. El Camino is the ultimate street for chain stores, malls, auto dealers everything. If you’re looking for a store and you don’t know where it might be, drive down El Camino. Chances are you will find it either on El Camino itself or within 1-2 blocks. This is not a hard and fast rule but it has served me well.
